How to Grow A Weed-Free & Super-Productive Garden
Want a weed-free and super productive garden? This woman’s mission is to show gardeners across the nation that it is possible.
Have you ever dreamed of growing a garden that was more productive? Or a garden without all of the weeds?
Almost 30 years ago, Lynn Gillespie from the Living Farm, decided that her traditional row garden wasn’t producing what she needed. That first garden she grew for her family was a large plot, it required rototilling, and was overwhelmed by the weeds long before the final harvest. After facing all of the heartbreak in the garden, she saw little return. This traditional garden wasn’t a sustainable system for her family. So, she began to create a new garden system.
There were certain goals she had with this garden; those 12 requirements were:
- A system that worked in harmony with nature.
- Plants that are naturally disease and insect resistant.
- Virtually weed free growing space.
- Takes little time to care for.
- Requires little inputs such as expensive fertilizers or pesticides.
- Needs few tools to be properly taken care of.
- Well planned growing season.
- Produces food all season long.
- An extended growing season.
- To efficiently utilize all of the space in the garden
- Produce huge yields.
- Make gardening enjoyable and fun!
So, she began borrowing techniques from other growing systems, creating her own, and drawing from her family’s growing experience to create a new, super-productive garden system.
After decades of gardening, the High Performance Garden took shape. This garden system was built upon an organic system that mimicked nature’s soil food web. This soil food web was completely weed free, thanks to her family’s secret soil mix passed down to her from her parents greenhouse business. This system, allowed the Living Farm to produce incredible amounts of produce for her community.
Now the question was, could this system be downsized? In 2008, the Living Farm Educational Center was built. At first it welcomed in young farmers for apprenticeships. This large scale system made production so much more productive and easy for young farmers!
This system had potential beyond large scale farming, it was time to bring the weed free garden full circle and make it available for backyard gardeners. “Feed a child a carrot, and he eats for a day. Teach a child to garden and he eats for a lifetime.” Is one of Lynn’s favorite sayings, “There is a world full of future gardeners who just need a simple successful system.” Lynn shared, “All they need is a little education to get started.”
In 2014 she began filming the online Abundance Garden Course. This 128 square foot garden in just 33 weeks produced $2,560 worth of produce. Averaging 5 pounds of produce per square foot, while the average gardener in a 2008 study were found to produce only ½ a pound!
The Abundance Garden course has had many successful students. “I’m used to gardening large plots of ground that are poorly nourished— so I’d have inconsistent results and increasingly poor outcomes. Seeing and doing the CBG (Cinder Block Garden) has given me a new perspective that makes sense and makes results….I fully intend to add additional CBGs each year—they are a beautiful addition to our home—And a great conversation piece! Inspiring to everyone who’s sees them.” Barbara Starke, a student of the Abundance Garden Course said about her experience in the course,
Barbara is in her second year of the Abundance Garden, and is now teaching her family how to grow a High Performance Garden in their backyard!
“My mission is to reach 5,000 gardeners this year with the High Performance Garden System. I want to see a world where everyone is saving $1,000s in grocery costs and enjoying the best quality of food right from their backyards,” says Lynne.
The online Abundance Garden Course now has students from all over the world, with open enrollment at all times of the year. It is packed with 48 hours of video gardening education, a vegetable planting guide, and problem solving guide. The closest education even close to this would be to hire a master gardener to coach you in your garden throughout a growing season. That would cost up to $3,000. This online course is priced at $299, which you easily can make back in your first year gardening!
