[Video] How to Build a Simple Bean Teepee

Climbing beans work great for growing vertically in small gardens. Here is a quick and easy method of building a simple bean teepee to support your climbing beans and/or peas…

Beans and peas make excellent additions to your garden. They produce tasty fresh pods for weeks at a time when picked regularly, and they also fix nitrogen in the soil, making them a great companion or succession plant for your garden. Climbing varieties are best for small gardens, as you can grow them vertically on a trellis to save space and enjoy an ongoing crop throughout the summer months. (These are also a great choice for those gardeners with limited mobility who find bending to harvest difficult.)

To support your climbing beans, you can use a variety of structures, from a fence to a wire trellis or other support, but one of the easiest is a simple bean teepee made of bamboo, sticks, or PVC pipe. Since beans and peas are fairly light vines, they don’t need a super-strong structure, so a simple teepee like this is usually plenty sturdy to support them.
